The Tamron 70-210mm F4 Di VC USD is a lightweight telephoto zoom lens for DSLR cameras that comes in at an MSRP of $799 / £699 / €799, undercutting its Nikon and Canon competitors significantly. Despite the wallet-friendly price tag, the Tamron offers solid build quality and good optical performance.

The new 70-200mm f/2.8E FL VR is built on that legacy and I have no doubt that it will be as good, if not better, than its predecessors. NIKON D810 + 70-200mm f/2.8 @ 200mm, ISO 64, 1/160, f/5.6. While the lens certainly feels solid in hands, I cannot praise Nikon’s decision on reversing the focus and zoom rings.
Lab results. Verdict. The Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 is the second ‘Generation 2’ lens in Tamron’s alternative trinity for Sony E-mount cameras. It follows in the footsteps of Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD G2 standard zoom, and the Tamron 17-28mm F2.8 Di III RXD wide-angle zoom, the latter still in its original version.

The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM is the company’s latest 70-200mm and its first with an image stabilizer. It covers a 2.9x zoom-range and was announced February 2011. Sigma offers this lens with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax and Sigma mounts and it is cheaper than any other stabilized 70-200/2.8 zoom.
I love capturing wildlife, particularly birds. I own the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 but thought I'd try the 2x teleconverter with my 70-200 f2.8 S lens, hoping the pictures would be equal or even better than the 200-500. The 20-500 has always been a reliable workhorse but is quite heavy.

The older 70-200mm/f2.8 AF-S VR has less breathing, but it is well known that at 200mm, its corner sharpness is terrible, at any aperture. I have both lenses and the VR II is clearly the better lens, at a higher cost..
Moreover, any lens' official focal length is always measured when the lens is focused to infinity.
